The Zoe Séance performance at Lothringer 13 Halle

The ZOE SÉANCE

Zoe Séance is a metaphysical ritual by Unnur Andrea Einarsdottir and Panja Göbel. What does it mean to be human in a time of constant change, where one crisis follows the other? Participants were invited to take part in a ritual to embody new inter species constructs altered by their own brain waves.

What does it mean to be human in a time of constant change, where one crisis follows the other? How can we adapt our subjective embodiments to an increasingly unstable future? Zoe Séance is building on these questions with the theories of the feminist posthumanist Rosi Braidotti, for whom subjectivity is always already in motion and bodies only materialise in the nomadic act of becoming other or alien. Braidotti proposes a concept of embodiment, which she calls ‘zoe’ and which is based on three fundamental metamorphoses: becoming animal, becoming earth and becoming machine. (Braidotti, The Posthuman, 2013)

Within a part tribalist part surveillance setting the Zoe Séance takes up these speculative figurations and translates them into an offer of personalised transformational experience via an AR app. Wearing a brain headset whilst embracing their alienating reflection, the participant is working towards a loss of ego held by the group's alpha state of mind. Their image is streamed across 3 other screens, for the participants to witness, for the audience to evaluate group dynamics / hive mind, their own feelings about what’s happening and surveillance within the network.
